A group of private investors from both San Diego and Tijuana region are working together on an ambitious project consisting in a cross-border terminal in Otay Mesa San Diego that would serve Tijuana’s A.L. Rodríguez International Airport.
This terminal located in Otay Mesa San Diego will serve to the Tijuana Airoport because of its direct connection through a unique port of entry by building a border pedestrian bridge that could be used only by ticketed passengers.
This proposal has a large acceptance from the city of San Diego, so far San Diego City Council approved an amendment to the plan, but there are needed also federal approvals in U.S. and Mexico.
Considering the strategic location of Otay Mesa which is a industrial location, were most of the multinational companies located in Mexico (Mexican Maquiladoras) are having their administrative offices or their warehouse in Otay Mesa San Diego, this project is bringing advantages not only for passengers, but also for logistics.
Another advantage of this project is that by improving their logistic it will be expecting to attract more investment at Tijuana-San Diego border region.
On the other side, the citizens of San Diego which are considering flying to Tijuana Airport and are going back to San Diego can avoid the long lines at the Tijuana-San Diego border ports of entry.
This year, 2012 is expected to be finished the administrative procedure for the approval of the plan and by the end of this year is also expected to begin construction, which is a year and a half project.
