Tour of Baja’s top medical device manufacturing facilities

Baja California has developed one of the largest concentrations of medical device manufacturing employment in North America, consolidated as an important Mexico Manufacturing cluster with over 60 Medical Device companies. Most of the manufacturing facilities are located in Tijuana just less than 30 minutes from downtown San Diego, mainly dedicated to manufacture and assemble parts and components for the medical industry.
The Tijuana manufacturing base is growing in complexity; and in the last few years there is a more conscious need for strengthen manufacturing in San Diego/Tijuana in areas such as advanced contract manufacturing and supply chain logistics management.
In order to increase this bi-national character there is required increasing bi-national approaches.
One of these approaches is a conjoint initiative between of MEDevice Forum San Diego and the Tijuana Economic Development Corporation that are organizing a complimentary bus tour of Baja’s top medical device manufacturing facilities — On September 18, 2012.
The purpose of this tour is to show investors and other manufacturing representatives what are the cross-border manufacturing opportunities. For this tour was selected Greatbatch Medical and Fisher & Paykel, two representatives medical facilities located in Tijuana.
Fisher & Paykel, has its origins in New Zeeland back in 1971, when they entered into the respiratory care market with the development of a unique respiratory humidifier system for use in critical care. In Tijuana the company was installed in 2011 and manufactures a broad range of products and systems for use in respiratory and acute care and the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Greatbatch, Inc. is a USA corporation founded in 1970 to develop long-lived primary batteries to fuel pacemakers. Today after experiencing multiple acquisitions is a world leader in vascular access and orthopedics, machining and assembly of components for implantable medical devices for the cardiac rhythm management, neuromodulator and interventional radiology markets.
